FAQs

You’re probably wondering how crowdfunded publishing works. Here are the answers to some popular questions we get asked.

Who do we work with?

To publish a book that’s based on a TV show, Idiot Box Books needs to acquire a license from the IP holders.

Who writes the books?

That depends on the title. In most cases, series creators are given first refusal to write the books themselves. Alternatively, an Idiot Box Books author can write the book, or collaborate with the original writers.

Where can I buy the books?

The best way to get your copy is by pledging to support the book through our crowdfunding campaigns on Kickstarter. That gives us the confidence to know the book will be commercially viable before it’s been published, and it guarantees you a copy once it’s been released. If an individual title attracts a large readership, we’ll explore distributing it more widely, and making it available in bookshops and online platforms like Amazon. All of our books will be available to buy from our website.

How much will the books cost?

We try to make sure our books are affordable, but they’ll inevitably be more expensive than a mass trade paperback because of economies of scale. Remember, we’re publishing titles that other publishers simply ignore because they struggle to see a big enough return on their investment. We rely on fan support to make these projects happen, and the more generous the support, the more projects we can publish. But all campaigns allow for smaller pledges (for instance an ebook) as well as larger contributions to keep things affordable for all budgets.

What will I get in return for my support?

Everyone who pledges their support through our crowdfunding campaigns receives a copy of the book (either a printed copy or an ebook depending on their pledge). Then there are exclusive extras which readers can access in return for a higher pledge. These can include collectors’ editions, add ons and unique experiences. As a micropublisher, we rely on this additional support to keep the doors open.

What titles are you going to publish?

Lots (hopefully). We’re actively exploring conversations with license holders about dramas, thrillers, sci-fi shows, comedies and children’s TV programmes. This includes programmes made in the sixties, through to the noughties, from all around the world. If a title’s been on TV, and it still has an active fanbase, it’s something we’d consider. If you’d like to suggest a title for publication, please contact us.

What happens if I’ve supported a project and it doesn’t hit its target?

Our crowdfunding platform automatically refunds supporters in full if projects don’t meet their targets.
